Dear Parents,
Today, I taught them how to write a composition that has four pictures. There are some guided questions and helping words for each picture in the story where they can use them to help them form their story. They do not need to only write the paragraph based on those questions. They can also add in more of their own ideas.
I also told them that they need to use past or past continuous tense for the story unless they are writing a dialogue (speech). For dialogue, they need to use present or present continuous tense.
Most of the time, they have to write a narrative, which is a story. They need to learn to write a paragraph each for the four pictures by following the four points below:
1) Introduction
- Write about the setting which includes the place and time (Set the scene). After that, introduce the character or characters of the story.
2) Development
- Try to develop the story by giving an exciting beginning to make the readers want to find out more on what is going to happen next.
3) Problem
- Write about the problem or the main event of the story (Give a good plot).
4) Solution + Ending (Conclusion)
- Give a solution to the problem or have an ending for the whole story. They can try to use description of feelings. E.g Peter felt sorry for what he had done and promised never to do it again.
I have also taught them the use of 5W and 1H (Who, Where, When, What, Why and How) to help them to think of what they want to write for each paragraph. They do not always have to use all but just some of them. E.g Where is the story taking place? What is going to happen next?
I have demonstrated to them and taught them how to write paragraph 1 and 2 which are for pictures 1 and 2 in Handout 7 of the Write Right Booklet in class. They need to complete the story by writing paragraph 3 and 4 which are for pictures 3 and 4 at home as homework.
Homework
1) Do Handout 7 (Pg 7 and 8). They can pass up on Thur instead as they are having a Math AMODE test tomorrow.
