Re: English (31st March) & LC AMODE test on next Friday (8/4)
Dear Parents,
Today, I continued with unit 9 open-ended comprehension. I have taught them more techniques this time. Other than underlining the question word and the verb to know what they need to find and the tense to use (e.g. why - asking for a reason, is - means use present tense when answering), I have introduced three things for them to check. They need to write the alphabets S, P and G at the side of each question.
'S' stands for spelling, 'P' stands for punctuation and 'G' stands for grammar, so they need to check that all the 3 things are written properly after they finished writing each answer. Basically, for spelling (S), they need to check that all the words are spelled correctly, for punctuation (P), they need to make sure commas (if needed), full stops and etc are there, for grammar (G), they need to check their tense, sentence structure and whether did they answer in complete sentences.
You can refer to the open-ended comprehension in unit 9 learning sheet for the techniques. Do try to use these techniques whenever you are doing open-ended comprehension with them at home so that they can then have a habit of using them every time.
They are going to have their first graded AMODE test next Friday (8/4). It will be a listening comprehension (LC) AMODE test.
That's why I also did a listening comprehension (LC) practice with them today. Please take note that today's paper is only a practice. It is in their file. This is going to be similar to their actual LC AMODE test next Friday (8/4). For next Friday's LC AMODE test, they need to revise learning sheets (LS) 7.5, 8.3, 8.5 and 9.7.
All their learning sheets are in the EL file. You can use them to revise but kindly put them back in order after that as they will need to bring back their EL file after their LC AMODE test.

1) Sign EL file content pg (numbers 11 to 14), unit 8 and 9 learning sheets and the LC AMODE practice paper. Bring back the file after your next Friday's LC AMODE test.

Re: English (28th March)
Dear Parents,
Today, I taught them present continuous tense (am/is/are + verb with 'ing') which is to talk about things that are going to happen or happening now. I then told them that they may have to take out some letters (chase - chasing) or add in additional letters (put - putting) for some verbs when changing to 'ing' forms. Do reinforce this point to them. They will slowly get the idea as they read or do more work.
E.g.
I am eating durians.
Look! The dog is chasing the cat.
They are going to the zoo tomorrow.
I also taught them new contractions.
E.g.
that's - that is
I'll - I will
I'm - I am
don't - do not
you're - you are
there's - there is
Then, we went on to conjunctions (or, so)
E.g.
Do you want some rice or noodles?
Do your work now or I will take away your toy.
The people were afraid of the giant so they ran away.
Lastly, I taught them the initial consonant, 'g' (j) sound and vowels ('ee' , 'ow')

Dear Parents,
I have given the following items to the boys:
1) EL file
- Please revise and bring it back on the Monday after the March holidays.
2) EL Grammar Workbook
- Please revise and bring it back on the Monday after the March holidays.
3) A worksheet for them to write their script for their hand puppet show and tell
-They need to choose a character from only the book, 'The Jungle Book' and write out the script about that particular character in the story. They can use the sample (Appendix 4) in the given worksheet as a form of guidance.
Once they have chosen their character and written the script, they need to make a hand puppet of that character that they have chosen. They also need to memorise the script that they have written as they will be presenting to the whole class on the Monday after the March holidays. A pupil will then be selected to represent the class during the talent showcase for EL week on 29th March,
Below are some samples of the hand puppet:
A summary for the EL week:
- Costume-making from any of the characters in the 6 books stated in the yellow letter (using recycled materials)
- A script based on a character from only 'The Jungle Book' and memorise it
- Make a hand puppet of that particular character

The pupils are encouraged to make a costume during their holiday using recycled materials. The character can be anyone or any animal/object from the 6 books that are listed in the letter. They need to be in their costumes on 29th March (Tue) where they can parade around during Terrific Tuesday.
I will update more again on the talent showcase tomorrow. The P1 pupils are supposed to be doing a hand puppet show and tell based on the book, 'The Jungle Book'. Therefore, they need to read that story and know the different characters well. I will be explaining more on the talent showcase to the boys tomorrow as there's a worksheet where they do their script on. All the boys will need to memorise their scripts. Dear Parents,
Today, I recapped on what verbs are. I then taught them the initial consonants (/j/, /fl/, /sm/, /sk/) and the vowel sound (/u/ as in the word, 'tub').
E,g, /j/ - jug, /fl/ - flower, /sm/ - smoke, /sk/ - ski
I also taught them another question word, 'Where'. It is asking for a place.
E.g. Where does Mr. Smarty Pants perform?
(He performs at the circus.) - place
I have given the a SPUR worksheet. It is a worksheet that comprises of many small activities that they will complete after reading a different storybook each time. Therefore, for this week, they are going to read their favourite book and complete the activity for their favourite book (the first activity).
Homework
1) Do SPUR, 'My Favourite Book'.
2) Do LS 8.6
Admin
A 'Charities Week' yellow envelope has been given to all of them. Please read through and decide if you will like to donate. If you are donating, please put the money in and seal the envelope. If you are not, kindly write down your boy's name and indicate 'nil' on the front. Please pass it to me next Monday.
